Auditor-Controller/Treasurer/Tax Collector Ensen Mason is pleased to present another fascinating story of the many great county residents that have served in his position since 1853.
George R. Holbrook was born on June 17, 1851, in Ashfield, Massachusetts and was the youngest of five children.
Holbrook and his parents relocated to Buckland, Massachusetts, where he received his primary education. He stayed with his mother until he was 16 years old after his father passed.
On November 21, 1875, Holbrook married Emma Augusta in Adamsville, Massachusetts and they relocated to Ontario, California.
Holbrook was initially elected to the office of justice of the peace in 1887. During his tenure as a judge, he developed a sound reputation for his fair and impartial administration of justice. His supporters included many individuals who had appeared in his courtroom for minor law infractions. In 1892, he was elected as the county auditor, and later served as the second district supervisor in 1895. In 1913, he was appointed as a judge for the city of Ontario.
Holbrook, known as the West End Pioneer Judge, passed away on September 28, 1932. Ontario city offices closed for the day in honor of his service.
