This week’s history feature returns to another fascinating story of the many great county residents that have served in Auditor-Controller/Treasurer/Tax Collector Ensen Mason’s position since 1853.

Paul Nichols, a resident of Ontario, was appointed county auditor in 1946 to fill the unexpired term of Vincent L. Roth, who held the position for 23 years before his death.

Prior to his appointment, Nichols served in a variety of roles within the Auditor’s Office starting in 1923, and also served on several boards and committees including:

  • Chief deputy auditor
  • Statistician
  • Member, County Building Committee
  • County Boundary Committee
  • President, San Bernardino County Employees Association
  • Secretary, County Retirement Association
  • Member, California State Auditors Association

Nichols was praised by the Grand Jury for maintaining a system of checks and balances to protect county finances. The amount of work and complexity of problems made it necessary for Nichols to implement more efficient processes.

Nichols’ experience in governmental accounting was given statewide recognition by his election to the California State Auditors Association in 1953.
