Starting Oct. 1, residents may notice a new look on ambulances and crew uniforms serving San Bernardino County as Consolidated Fire Agencies (CONFIRE) EMS & Mobile Health begins providing ambulance service.
Emergency services will continue uninterrupted. Ambulances and crew uniforms will carry the CONFIRE branding, but the 911 system will work the same way it does today. Anyone who needs emergency help should continue to call 911.
CONFIRE, a regional partnership of fire agencies that coordinates fire and emergency medical dispatch services, will operate the regional ambulance system serving the county’s exclusive operating areas, including several unincorporated communities served by the San Bernardino County Fire Protection District. It will provide ground ambulance services, 911 emergency response, transportation between health care facilities, and critical care transportation through a public-private partnership with Priority Ambulance, the nation’s second-largest ambulance provider.
“San Bernardino County residents can expect top notch, professional and coordinated emergency medical care through CONFIRE’s regional ambulance system,” said Board of Supervisors Chairman and Third District Supervisor Dawn Rowe. “By bringing together local oversight, experienced personnel and additional resources, the new system will strengthen regional emergency response and help ensure care is available when residents need it most.”
Ambulance responses will be coordinated through CONFIRE’s Command and Control Center, which uses medical dispatch protocols to identify the appropriate resources for each call.
CONFIRE also uses the Emergency Communications Nurse System for certain 911 calls involving less urgent medical needs. When clinically appropriate, a licensed registered nurse assesses the caller’s condition and may connect the person with telehealth services, an urgent care center, a physician’s office or a pharmacy when an ambulance response or hospital transport isn’t necessary. This helps patients receive care suited to their needs while keeping first responders, ambulances and hospitals available for more critical emergencies.
