Simple steps can help protect your family from mosquitoes this summer.

As summer temperatures rise, the San Bernardino County Mosquito and Vector Control Program (MVCP) is reminding residents that simple prevention steps can make a big difference in reducing mosquito activity around your home.

Mosquitoes are more than just a nuisance; they can spread diseases such as West Nile virus, dengue, Zika and other illnesses. Warm weather and routine outdoor watering create conditions where even small amounts of standing water can quickly become breeding sites. Mosquitoes can develop from an egg to a biting adult in under a week, so regularly removing standing water is one of the best ways to eliminate breeding sites.

“Mosquito control is most effective when the community takes an active role,” said David Alaniz, MVCP program manager. “By reducing standing water and taking preventive measures, residents can make a meaningful impact on public health.”

Simple steps to reduce mosquito activity include:

  • Dump and drain standing water around your home, including plant saucers, buckets, tires and clogged drains.
  • Avoid overwatering lawns and outdoor areas.
  • Wear long sleeves and pants when outdoors, especially during dawn and dusk.
  • Use insect repellent containing DEET, Picaridin, IR3535 or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
  • Ensure doors and windows have tight-fitting screens.

MVCP also offers services to help residents, including courtesy inspections and providing mosquito fish for eligible water features.
