When an emergency occurs, the public often sees the response, but not the planning, coordination and partnerships that make that response possible.
August is National Emergency Management Awareness Month, an annual observance led by the International Association of Emergency Managers to highlight the emergency management profession and the people who help communities prepare for, respond to and recover from disasters.
Emergency management does not begin when a disaster strikes. It is ongoing work that includes developing plans, conducting training and exercises, coordinating resources, sharing critical information and working with partner agencies and community organizations to strengthen readiness.
The San Bernardino County Office of Emergency Services (OES) supports this work through countywide planning, emergency operations coordination, public preparedness information and emergency alerts. It also provides resources, such as the Ready SB County app, and works with local agencies and community partners to strengthen emergency readiness across the county.
This August, OES is launching Behind the Ready, a campaign highlighting the dedicated professionals and partners who support emergency management every day. Throughout the month, OES will share video spotlights and stories that introduce the people behind the planning, coordination and community outreach that take place before, during and after an emergency.
