In honor of National Child Passenger Safety Week (Sept. 20-26), First 5 San Bernardino reminded families of the free car seat safety resources available throughout our county to help keep little ones safe while on the move, a key component of the Kid Safe Summer campaign, through the “Dad’s Ultimate Car Seat Challenge.”

First 5 San Bernardino was featured on “Good Day LA” on FOX 11, putting one San Bernardino County dad to the test on installing a car seat. A car seat safety expert with San Bernardino County Public Health Department critiqued his handiwork, showing viewers best practices for properly installing car seats.

Motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death and injury for children ages 1-12, and nearly half of car seats are installed incorrectly, according to the San Bernardino County Department of Public Health.

“Families are busy, especially now that school is back in session, and sometimes we don’t pay enough attention to whether a child is correctly secured in their car seat,” said First 5 San Bernardino Executive Director Cindy Faulkner. “First 5 San Bernardino wants parents to know that one thing they can do to make sure their little ones are safe is to take a little extra time to make sure they are using their car seat correctly.”

First 5 San Bernardino also shared a list of local car seat safety resources available to families countywide, available on the Kid Safe Summer webpage.
