San Bernardino County Office of Emergency Services hosted its first-ever Family Preparedness Day on Saturday, Sept. 26, bringing families, friends and neighbors together for a morning of hands-on activities designed to build practical emergency preparedness skills. The event was held in partnership with San Bernardino County Library.

Throughout the event, families explored interactive preparedness activities covering a variety of topics. Emergency Services staff demonstrated how to build emergency kits for home, car, and shelter-in-place situations, as well as for pets. Children and adults also learned basic first aid skills and participated in a hands-on fire extinguisher exercise designed to help residents become more familiar with how to respond during an emergency.

Highland Fire Department personnel joined the event to provide hands-only CPR demonstrations, giving participants an opportunity to learn and practice lifesaving techniques.

Emergency Services staff also worked one-on-one with residents to help them sign up for the Telephone Emergency Notification System (TENS) and download the Ready SB County app, connecting families with important tools and information they can use before, during and after an emergency.

“It was incredibly rewarding to see how eager people were to learn more about emergency preparedness,” said Brianna Viteri, public relations and community outreach coordinator, Emergency Services. “Families were asking questions, practicing skills and taking information home to share with their workplaces, neighbors and loved ones. That is what preparedness is about — giving our community practical tools and information they can use before an emergency happens.”

Several attendees even asked when the next Family Preparedness Day would be held, showing continued interest in opportunities to learn and prepare.

The first-ever Family Preparedness Day brought residents, Emergency Services staff and community partners together around a shared goal — helping families feel more informed, confident and ready before an emergency happens.
