Matthew Knox, a distinguished former Cavalry Scout with over two years of service in the United States Army, has been appointed by the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors as the director of Veterans Affairs, effective Sept. 24.

“It’s such an honor to lead this organization because our team plays a pivotal role in ensuring veterans and their families receive the benefits they earned through service to our country,” said Knox. “The department has developed a reputation as a tireless advocate for veterans, and I plan to continue this legacy into the foreseeable future.”

During his military career, Knox was deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom with 1st Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment in 2003. During his deployment, Knox was wounded by enemy combatants during an ambush of his mounted patrol near the Baghdad International Airport and was subsequently awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star Medal with Valor Device.

Knox brings six years of experience with San Bernardino County, where he most recently served as the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) program officer. Prior to this role, he held several significant political positions, including chief of staff to Board of Supervisors Chairman and Third District Supervisor Dawn Rowe and district director to then-U.S. Representative Col. Paul Cook (Ret.).

Knox holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from California State University, San Bernardino. With his extensive experience and skill set, Knox is well-prepared to represent and support the veteran community within San Bernardino County.
