Auditor-Controller/Treasurer/Tax Collector (ATC) Ensen Mason is pleased to present another captivating story of the many great county residents that have served in his position since 1853.
J.B. Burkhart served as county tax collector from 1882 to 1884. In November 1882, he was also elected as sheriff of San Bernardino County, which in those lawless times required courage. He served in both positions simultaneously and was able to meet the satisfaction of the people.
Prior to his time in San Bernardino County, Burkhart and a few other men discovered the Auburn Placer Mines in Baker County, Oregon in 1862.
