County Library partners with Ono Hawaiian BBQ for fall reading program

The San Bernardino County Library is pleased to announce a new partnership with Ono Hawaiian BBQ restaurants to promote reading among children ages 0 to 17. It’s an Ono Autumn at the Library program will run from Sept. 1 to Nov. 30 at all San Bernardino County branch locations. 

“We are thrilled to partner with Ono Hawaiian BBQ to promote literacy and a love for reading among our youngest residents,” said Board of Supervisors Chairman and Third District Supervisor Dawn Rowe. “In order to achieve our Countywide Vision, we need to ensure our children are meeting their grade level requirements, particularly with reading.” 

San Bernardino County residents are invited to participate in the program by signing up through Beanstack at sbclib.beanstack.org. To earn an achievement award, participants must check out five books with their library card, read those five books and track their reading through Beanstack.  A voucher for a free kid’s meal will be issued at any of the 32 San Bernardino County Library locations. Participants may earn up to three vouchers for the duration of the program. 

Participants do not need to have their own library card to participate but are encouraged to sign up for one. Receipts must be presented at the service desk during the library’s operating hours, including renewed items. Ono Hawaiian BBQ restaurants will honor the vouchers at any Southern California location. All vouchers are available while supplies last.

In support of the Vision2Read literacy campaign as well as San Bernardino County’s Opportunity campaign, this program aims to improve literacy rates among children ages 0 to 17 by inspiring a love for reading, providing achievement goals and encouraging a reading routine.

Museum shakes things up by adding treats to their annual Shake or Treat Earthquake and Emergency Preparedness Fair

No tricks, just treats! Bring the entire family to the San Bernardino County Museum on Saturday, Oct. 19, for their annual Shake or Treat Earthquake and Emergency Preparedness Fair. Local businesses and county departments will be handing out candy, goodies and emergency preparedness materials as kids and families walk through the parking lot dressed in costumes.
 
This free event offers residents the opportunity to learn how to prepare themselves, their families, their homes and their neighborhoods for wildfires, earthquakes and other disasters. The day will also feature hands-on preparedness demonstrations, resources and emergency supplies at partner booths.
 
The museum has partnered with a multitude of departments and organizations throughout the county that will be on hand including the San Bernardino County Office of Emergency Services, San Bernardino County Transitional Assistance Department, San Bernardino County Public Health, San Bernardino County Behavioral Health, San Bernardino County Airports, San Bernardino County Public Works/Special Districts, San Bernardino County Children and Family Services, Devore Animal Shelter, Redlands CERT, LifeStream, Redlands Police Department, 211/Inland So Cal United Way and more to get you better prepared for any kind of disaster.

Apple Valley Airshow returns highlighting vintage jets, car show, skydivers, STEM Expo and more

The Department of Airports is pleased to announce the return of the 21st Annual Apple Valley Airshow and NAPA® Car Show on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2024, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Apple Valley Airport. General admission is $10, military/veteran is $7 cash with ID and children 11 and under are free. Parking is also free.

The Apple Valley Airshow, a family favorite event, attracts spectators from all over Southern California and beyond. Apple Valley Airshow attendees will be thrilled by the sights and sounds of this year’s headliners, which include world-renowned pilots flying vintage jets such as Jason Somes in the red Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG 17, David Costa flying the TS-11 Iskra, Ace Maker Airshows in the Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star, and Stephanie Goetz in The Pink Jet L-39 Albatros with a trail of customized pink smoke to promote breast cancer awareness.

A full schedule is planned, including Dawn Patrol RV Formation Team of Five, breathtaking aerobatics by Undaunted Airshows formation aerobatics dual team, Air Racer Tony Higa in the Pitts S-1S, John Collver in his AT-6/SNJ “Wardog,” Yuichi Takagi in the Pitts S2S, Torrey Ward in the Micro Jet, Anthony Oshinuga in the Pitts Special and Dr. Vicky Benzing in her bright red 1940 Boeing Stearman.

There will be a meet and greet with the pilots for photos and autographs after each performance.

On the ground, you will see experimental and vintage airplane static displays, military vehicles and the NAPA® Car Show “Show and Shine,” along with Inglis Classics’ “Hot Rod Hotties” and Sunland Ford showcasing new vehicle highlights. Spectators are encouraged to stop by the NAPA® booth and pick up a form to vote for your favorite car.

The High Desert aerospace valley STEM Expo has been expanded for 2024 with new partnerships, exhibitors and hands-on experiences in aviation activities. The Air & Space STEM Outreach from Edwards Air Force Base has coordinated free youth experiences in partnership with the Air Force Academy, Civil Air Patrol, Stem Pilot, ROTC and Edwards AFB activities. The expanded STEM Expo will include Southern California EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) flight simulators, Millionaire Mind Kids, Rocket Science Club of San Diego and the Science Olympiads of Irvine. General Atomics has also created a specially designed experience for you to see the work they do right here in the High Desert. Bring your children, school friends, Scout groups and families to learn about the fundamentals of flight, fly a simulator, build a model airplane or stomp an air-powered rocket to new heights.

Community groups, volunteer organizations and our sponsors are a big part of the airshow. The show provides scholarship support for local students in STEM fields. You can browse booths offering information, souvenirs, food and support the Rotary Club of Apple Valley Beer Garden.

Plan to arrive early to give yourself plenty of time to secure parking, walk to the main entry gates and purchase your admission.

Apple Valley Airport is located at 21600 Corwin Rd. in Apple Valley. No animals except service animals are allowed at the event. There is limited grandstand seating available, but you are welcome to bring your own portable chairs and sitting blankets. For safety, drones, canopies, large umbrellas, large coolers and alcoholic beverages will NOT be admitted to the venue. Be prepared with hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, earplugs, water and don’t forget your camera.

Calico Ghost Haunt ‘Where Nightmares Begin’ event will bewitch those who dare to visit

If spooking is your thing and Halloween brings out the howl in you, Calico Ghost Town may be the fright place to be the last two weekends in October for our annual Ghost Haunt: Where Nightmares Begin.

The first weekend of ghost haunting starts Friday, Oct. 18 through Sunday, Oct. 20 and the second weekend starts Friday, Oct. 25 through Sunday Oct. 27.

Ghost Haunt hours are:

Fridays: 5 to 9 p.m.

Saturdays: 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Sundays: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Ghost Haunting activities include trick-or-treating, costume contests for all ages, campsite decorating contest, live music and entertainment shows, gunfighter shows, family-friendly games and activities haunted attractions* (includes train rides, gold panning, haunted mine tours, Mystery Shack and ghost tours). *Attractions are an additional price. Town Scarers

Beware after dark as nightmares begin to roam throughout town haunted with frightful scarers who will lurk in the shadows waiting to prey on unsuspecting towns people.

Scare hours are:

Fridays from 5 to 9 p.m.

Saturdays from 6 to 10 p.m.

Costume Contest Guidelines
Visitors can enter our costume contest in one of the following categories to win a prize: funniest, cutest, scariest and most creative. Dogs can join in on the fun too as Dorsey’s Dog House hosts its dog costume contest on Saturdays.

Campsite Contest
Campers can also participate in our annual Ghost Haunt Campsite Decorating Contest based on the “Where Nightmares Begin” theme.

Dates, Admission and Hours
General admission for adults (12 & over) is $15, youth (ages 4-11) is $10 and ages 3 and under are free. Campers will also receive free admission with camping reservations. All ages are welcome. Child Support Services to hold third annual Trunk or Treat event

San Bernardino County Child Support Services (CSS) will hold its Third Annual Trunk or Treat, a free community event to provide a safe and fun way for children to celebrate Halloween and receive some free candy too, on Saturday, Oct. 26 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 10417 Mountain View Ave. in Loma Linda.

The popular outdoor event features over 25 community partners who will provide services and resources to families in San Bernardino County.


CSS professionals will be available to provide child support information and case-specific services. There will be games, prizes and special treats for the whole family. Don’t forget to dress up in your favorite costume and invite your friends.

Bloomington Recreation and Parks Trunk or Treat event

Bloomington Recreation and Parks is hosting a Trunk or Treat event at Ayala Park on Saturday, Oct. 26, from 5 – 8 p.m. This fun and safe Halloween celebration aims to serve the community, and last year’s event drew over 3,000 attendees! The event will feature candy, pop-up booths, costumed characters, inflatable games, food vendors, a DJ and more. Join us for a spooky time!
