Following a national recruitment, San Bernardino County has named Lauren Howland as its new public information officer. Howland brings more than a decade of experience in local government communications and media relations.
For Howland, the new role is also a homecoming. She grew up in the Inland Empire and returns to the region with extensive experience in crisis communications, media relations and strategic communications.
“Lauren brings a strong combination of local government and journalism experience, along with a deep understanding of the importance of clear, timely and transparent communication,” said San Bernardino County Chief Executive Officer Luther Snoke. “Her experience and connection to the Inland Empire will be tremendous assets as we continue strengthening how we communicate with the communities we serve.”
Howland most recently served as communications and public information manager for the city of Santa Monica. In that role, she oversaw communications for city programs, initiatives and events and served as an official spokesperson. Previously, she was the public information officer for Long Beach Utilities, where she managed public affairs and graphic design, acted as primary spokesperson, led crisis communications strategies and helped lead the organization’s rebranding effort.
Her local government experience also includes communication roles with the cities of Anaheim and San Gabriel. Before entering public service, Howland worked as a reporter for the Pasadena Star-News, covering local government, human-interest stories and breaking news throughout the San Gabriel Valley.
“It is an honor to join the San Bernardino County team,” Howland said. “I look forward to building on the county’s already strong communications program to continue to inform residents, businesses and visitors.”
As San Bernardino County’s public information officer, Howland will support countywide media relations and strategic communications. She will also work with county departments to provide accurate, timely and accessible information about programs, services and issues affecting communities across the region.
Howland joined San Bernardino County on Aug. 31. She succeeds longtime Public Information Officer David Wert, who retired in June after 26 years with the county.
