As the largest county in the country, San Bernardino County spans a diverse landscape of mountains, deserts and valleys, each with its own unique risks and hazards. Mountain communities may face wildfires, winter storms and road closures, while desert communities can experience extreme heat, high winds and flash flooding. In the valleys, earthquakes, extreme heat and wildfire smoke can impact homes and daily routines.
September is National Preparedness Month, a nationwide observance that encourages individuals, families and communities to prepare for emergencies and disasters. In San Bernardino County, preparedness can look different depending on where you call home.
This September, the San Bernardino County Office of Emergency Services is launching “Ready Together: Prepare Where You Live,” a campaign focused on helping residents understand the risks in their communities and take practical steps to prepare.
Throughout the month, Emergency Services will share preparedness information tailored to the county’s mountain, desert and valley communities, along with resources to help residents prepare for their households’ unique needs. Wherever you live, the basics remain the same: make an emergency plan, build a supply kit, know your evacuation routes and have multiple ways to stay informed.
Residents are also encouraged to download the Ready SB County app and sign up for TENS, San Bernardino County’s emergency notification system, to receive important information before and during an emergency. When we prepare where we live, we’re ready together.
