Ready to take a walk on the wild side of reading? This September, the San Bernardino County Library invites residents to grab a library card, discover something new and “Get Wild About Reading” with a month filled with free resources, programs and a special collection of wild reading buddies.
In celebration of Library Card Sign-Up Month, the County Library is reminding residents that some of the best adventures begin with one simple and completely free card.
From discovering a new favorite book or streaming an audiobook on the go to getting homework help, researching family history or learning a new skill, the County Library card puts a world of possibilities within reach.
“Whether you’re discovering a new favorite book, helping your child succeed in school or exploring one of the many digital resources available from home, a library card connects you to an incredible variety of opportunities,” said Assistant County Librarian Kristin Stevens. “Library Card Sign-Up Month is a great reminder that these resources belong to our community, and it all starts with getting a library card.”
One card. A wild world of possibilities.
A library card goes far beyond the books on the shelves.
Cardholders can explore eBooks and audiobooks, access homework and tutoring assistance, genealogy tools, educational and career resources, discover new skills and enjoy free programs and activities offered throughout the library’s 32 branches.
For students, a library card can provide valuable tools for homework, research and academic success. Parents and caregivers can discover resources that support early literacy and learning, while adults can explore career development, technology, lifelong learning and entertainment.
Best of all, the library can go wherever you do. Many of SBCL’s digital resources are available online, giving cardholders access to library resources from home or on the go.
Go wild for reading — and Squishmallows
The celebration gets even wilder with the County Library’s September theme, “Get Wild About Reading.”
Throughout the month, participating branches will host themed programs and activities that encourage children, families and customers of all ages to explore, discover and unleash their curiosity at the library.
And there may even be a new reading buddy waiting to go home with you.
From Sept. 12–25, customers who check out 30 qualifying items at a participating branch can choose a wild animal Squishmallow, while supplies last.
Choose from six wild reading buddies:
- Fox
- Capybara
- Red panda
- Giraffe
- Raccoon
- Mallard duck
Can’t pick just one? Customers can continue checking out qualifying materials during the promotional period for opportunities to collect additional designs, while supplies last.
Whether you’re wild about mysteries, crazy about comics, roaring for romance or hungry for your next great read, there is always another adventure waiting to be discovered at the library.

Celebrated nationally each September since 1987, Library Card Sign-Up Month encourages families, students and communities to discover the resources and opportunities available through their local libraries.
Getting an SBCL card is free and easy. Residents can sign up at any SBCL branch, visit the San Bernardino County Museum to receive a free library card, or sign up online to start exploring everything their library card can unlock.
