The San Bernardino County Transitional Assistance Department Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program successfully served 12,924 taxpayers this season, processing an impressive $25,304,310 in federal and state refunds and credits.
In response to growing demand for accessible tax services, the department offered its in-person services at 11 Transitional Assistance office locations, including three mobile locations. The VITA mobile team traveled across San Bernardino County, from Needles to Twentynine Palms, Phelan and Chino Hills, bringing free tax preparation services directly to residents in diverse and underserved communities.
This year, VITA established several new partnerships with agencies, community organizations and departments, including the office of Senator Suzette Martinez Valladares, the Victorville City Library, and the San Bernardino County Department of Child Support Services (DCSS), which proved very successful. The program also continued its collaboration with the nonprofit Aspiranet, supporting foster youth taxpayers across the region.
Expanding on program offerings initiated last year, VITA provided 197 self-employment returns with expenses for residents working in the growing gig economy, including those providing delivery, rideshare and childcare services.
Customer support remained a key strength of the program. The VITA Interactive Voice Response (IVR) team, consisting of 12 staff members, handled more than 13,000 calls throughout the tax season, ensuring residents received timely assistance and information.
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has commended Transitional Assistanceโs VITA program for its high-quality service, highlighting its well-organized team and consistent workflow. The departmentโs innovative approach reflects its ongoing commitment to providing free income tax preparation services to eligible low-income families and individuals, helping ensure access to the Earned Income Tax Credit and other federal and state credits.
โThe continued success of the VITA program highlights the power of strong partnerships and community outreach,โ said Transitional Assistance Director James LoCurto. โBy expanding access to free, high-quality tax services, we are helping more residents achieve financial stability and strengthening the local economy.โ
