San Bernardino County Fire is proud to launch a new pre-hospital blood transfusion program through a Local Optional Scope of Practice (LOSOP), allowing paramedics in Hesperia to carry and administer packed red blood cells to patients suffering from severe hemorrhagic shock. This advanced treatment gives paramedics another life-saving tool for critically injured patients, especially in areas with longer transport times to trauma centers.

Historically, first responders have had limited options in the field to replace significant blood or fluid loss during traumatic emergencies. Research continues to show that blood component therapy is one of the most effective treatments for patients experiencing hemorrhagic shock. This program is especially important for communities in the High Desert, where patients often face longer transport times to trauma centers. With the recent addition of St. Mary Medical Center as a Level III Trauma Center and the addition of pre-hospital blood product transfusions, critically injured patients will receive advanced care sooner than ever before.

โ€œOur San Bernardino County Fire paramedics continue to innovate and advance their profession,โ€ said Fire Chief Dan Munsey. โ€œI am excited for this life-saving initiative; it will make such a critical difference toward positive outcomes for the people we serve.โ€

San Bernardino County Fire will partner with LifeStream Blood Bank to support the program and help replenish this precious and limited resource through community blood drives. This initiative represents another step forward in bringing advanced, life-saving care directly to the people of San Bernardino County.
