Healthy habits start here: How PSD builds bright smiles every day

At San Bernardino County Preschool Services (PSD), we know the importance of helping children build healthy habits from an early age—and toothbrushing is one of the most important habits we can teach. When children have healthy teeth, they are better able to eat comfortably, stay focused and feel confident throughout the school day. That’s why daily toothbrushing has become an important part of our classrooms, right alongside story time and outdoor play.

Toothbrushing at the table is a practice supported by the Office of Head Start and has become a special part of our daily classroom routine. Children brush together, turning toothbrushing into a shared opportunity for learning and connection. Teachers sit alongside them, modeling brushing techniques and helping children understand that taking care of their teeth can be both simple and fun.

This routine is important because, according to the CDC, tooth decay is one of the most common childhood health concerns, yet it is largely preventable. Brushing each day with fluoride toothpaste helps strengthen tooth enamel, fight cavity-causing bacteria and establish healthy habits that can last a lifetime.

Each child receives their own set of brushing materials and teachers create an organized, hygienic environment that makes the routine comfortable and child-friendly. With gentle guidance and hands-on practice, children learn how to care for their teeth independently and develop the skills and confidence they need to maintain good oral health. It’s a small moment in the day that leads to big, long-term benefits.

With the encouragement and consistency of PSD staff, children learn to approach toothbrushing with confidence and joy. Over time, these daily routines help build brighter smiles, stronger self-esteem and a strong foundation for lifelong oral health. We are grateful for the support of our community partners, GeriSmiles, The Friendly Flosser and our Registered Dental Hygienist and Alternative Practice mobile dental hygiene provider, who help us extend these efforts beyond the classroom.
