Rechargeable batteries have become an important part of our everyday lives, powering everything from cellphones and laptops to power tools, bicycles and scooters. But these devices can also present a fire hazard when damaged, defective or charged incorrectly.
As more battery-powered products enter our homes and workplaces, understanding the risks and practicing safe charging habits are important steps in preventing fires and protecting our community.
Everyone can help reduce the risk by following a few simple precautions:
- Use the charger recommended by the manufacturer.
- Keep charging devices on a hard, stable surface and away from anything that can burn.
- Avoid charging devices while sleeping or when you are away from home.
- Pay attention to warning signs such as excessive heat, swelling, leaking, unusual odors or strange noises.
