September is National Preparedness Month. San Bernardino County encourages all residents to be ready and prepared for disasters that may strike our communities at any time. Extreme weather events are rising so planning ahead is extremely important.
The county has been impacted by fires, floods, earthquakes, pandemics, and extreme snow. We can become more resilient by taking steps to prepare and protect ourselves and those we care about including grandparents, neighbors, and community members outside of our households. We also need to prepare for our pet’s needs.
This year’s preparedness theme is “Take Control, 1, 2, 3.” The county focuses on preparing our older adults who can face greater risk when it comes to extreme weather events and other emergencies, especially if they live alone, have a disability, or live in a rural area.
San Bernardino County recommends the following steps:
1) Assess your needs
2) Make a plan
3) Engage your support network to stay safe when disaster strikes
Know what disasters could affect your area, which could call for an evacuation or shelter in place. Plan what you would do in either case. To better prepare for disasters, please visit www.ready.gov to learn tips and techniques.
