May the books be with you: Intergalactic Fan Wars takes over County Libraries

This month, San Bernardino County Library branches will transform into immersive battlegrounds of imagination during โIntergalactic Fan Wars,โ an all-ages celebration, inviting the community to take part in the ultimate sci-fi showdown: โStar Wars vs. Star Trek.โ
Blending reading incentives with fandom excitement, the program encourages patrons to explore the libraryโs extensive collections while pledging allegiance to their favorite universe. Whether inspired by the Force or captivated by the final frontier, patrons can earn themed rewards simply by doing what they do best โ reading!
Throughout the month, patrons who check out 30 items will have the opportunity to select a special incentive aligned with their chosen fandom. Designed to delight both Jedi and Starfleet loyalists, these rewards offer a fun and interactive way to celebrate personal interests while promoting literacy and community engagement.
โโIntergalactic Fan Warsโ is about more than choosing sides โ itโs about bringing people together through stories that have inspired generations,โ said Assistant County Librarian Kristin Stevens. โWeโre excited to create an experience where reading becomes a shared adventure, and every checkout fuels the fun.โ
In addition to literacy-based activities, select events will feature face painters and balloon artists, giving children the chance to transform into their favorite intergalactic heroes, villains and explorersโbringing the excitement of epic space adventures to life.
As part of the celebration, patrons who meet their branchโs checkout requirements during Intergalactic Fan Wars will earn a themed reward aligned with their chosen universe, along with an opportunity to win a grand prize. All events are free and open to the public. Programs are designed primarily for children and families, though fans of all ages are welcome to attend.

Highland Branch Library hosts weekly Farmers Market through new partnership
Following a highly successful debut, the San Bernardino County Library (SBCL) Highland Branch Farmers Market is set to continue as a weekly event, bringing fresh produce, local vendors, and community engagement to residents every Wednesday from 2 to 7 p.m.
Launched in partnership with the California Farmers Market Collective (CFMC), the market has quickly established itself as a vibrant hub where fresh food and community connection meet. The inaugural event drew strong attendance and enthusiastic participation, underscoring the demand for accessible, locally sourced goods and shared public spaces in the Highland community.
Held at the Highland Branch Library, the weekly market features a curated lineup of regional farmers, artisans, and food vendors. Guests can enjoy offerings from favorites such as Bon Jour Yogurt, Native Farms Hummus, Nickyโs Pizza, Grateful Dough Sourdough, Good Juju Coffee, and Great Day Farms, alongside a rotating selection of seasonal fruits, vegetables, and handcrafted products.
Importantly, the market accepts SNAP/EBT benefits, helping ensure that all community members have access to fresh, nutritious food options.
โThis is more than just a marketโitโs a gathering place,โ said Branch Manager Sarah Bartlett. โWeโre proud to see such a strong response from the community and look forward to continuing this partnership to provide both fresh food and valuable library resources in one welcoming space.โ
The grand opening also introduced a unique incentive program encouraging library use: patrons who check out 15 items receive a ticket redeemable for a custom tote bagโperfect for carrying both books and market finds. The program has already generated excitement among attendees and reinforces the libraryโs mission to connect literacy with everyday life.
โThe Highland Farmers Market isnโt just about buying produceโitโs about building community,โ said CFMC Founder Alexander Vallejos. โWeโre excited to see this become a weekly tradition where local farmers, small businesses, and families can come together and support one another.โ
With spring underway and momentum building, organizers anticipate continued growth as the market becomes a staple weekly event for Highland residents of all ages.
The Highland Farmers Market is free to attend and open to the public.

Evidence of Us: E. Tyler Burton, opening at San Bernardino County Museum

Rooted in close observation and everyday experience, Evidence of Us invites visitors to consider the material record we are creating in real time. Through sculpture, cyanotypes, textile installation, and participatory elements, artist E. Tyler Burton explores how ordinary objects, such as plastic bottles, clothing, and packaging, become lasting evidence of human impact.
Opening at the San Bernardino County Museum on May 9 and on view through Sept. 6, the exhibition examines what future generations might uncover about our present moment, an era shaped by consumption and accumulation. Burtonโs work began with simple acts of noticing, including collecting leftover plastic bottles after her childrenโs sports games. From these moments, her practice has grown into a broader reflection on the ways individual actions contribute to larger environmental and cultural systems.
Across the exhibition, familiar materials are recontextualized as artifacts. An installation constructed from discarded clothing surrounds visitors in the afterlife of fast fashion, while cyanotype โblueprintsโ of plastic objects line the walls like scientific records. A growing column of plastic caps becomes a visible measure of accumulation over time.
Evidence of Us offers visitors an opportunity to slow down, look closely, and reflect on what we leave behind, and how those traces shape the future.
San Bernardino County Museum is located at 2024 Orange Tree Lane in Redlands. The museum is accessible to people with disabilities and offers free parking. Admission is included with general museum admission: $10 for adults, $8 for military or seniors, $7 for students, and $5 for children ages 6โ12. Children five and under and Museum members are admitted free.
