For those visiting the Mojave National Preserve, the Lava Tube is located about five miles east of Kelbaker Road along unpaved Aiken Mine Road. A small street sign marks the intersection of Kelbaker and Aiken Mine roads. A high-clearance vehicle is recommended because Aiken Mine Road is a narrow, rough, sandy, washboard road with occasional large rocks. Low-clearance vehicles are not advised. Visitors should allow at least 30 minutes to reach the Lava Tube.
From the junction of Kelbaker and Aiken Mine roads, follow Aiken Mine Road for about 4.5 miles and stay left at the fork. Continue for another quarter-mile until the road widens into a circular parking area. From there, walk uphill about 300 yards to a fence, turn right and follow the worn path to a metal ladder leading into the Lava Tube.
Visitors should bring a flashlight and watch for snakes and the low ceiling in the tube, which may require crawling. The site is not regularly maintained by the National Park Service, so visitors enter at their own risk. There are no restrooms or trash cans at the site, so visitors should pack everything out.
