North San Bernardino Front Country Fuels Reduction map.

The San Bernardino County Fire Protection District recently completed the North San Bernardino Fuels Reduction Project, a large-scale effort to reduce wildfire risk and strengthen protection for communities along the city’s northern wildland-urban interface.

The project included clearing approximately 622 acres of vegetation and establishing a strategic fuel break from Highway 18 to Devil Canyon. Crews also removed and disposed of more than 20 tons of trash and more than 2,000 discarded tires from the project area.

The work helps reduce hazardous fuels while creating areas where firefighters can more effectively engage a wildfire and work to slow its spread toward nearby communities. Removing accumulated trash and tires also eliminated materials that could contribute to fire intensity and create additional hazards during a wildfire.

The project is part of the San Bernardino County Fire Protection District’s Fuels Mitigation Program. Throughout the year, County Fire personnel identify and complete projects in areas where vegetation management can help reduce fire intensity, slow fire spread and provide firefighters with safer and more effective locations to defend communities.

The North San Bernardino project was a collaborative effort supported by multiple public and private partners. Assisting agencies and organizations included CAL FIRE, California Conservation Corps Pomona Crew 1, the city of San Bernardino, Union Pacific Railroad, the San Bernardino County Flood Control District and Burrtec Waste Industries.

Although fuels reduction cannot eliminate the threat of wildfire, proactive mitigation can help reduce fire intensity and slow its spread while providing firefighters with additional opportunities to protect lives, property and communities.
