As temperatures rise and families head to pools, lakes, beaches and water parks to cool off, San Bernardino County Fire is reminding residents that water safety should always be a top priority. In recognition of Water Safety Week, firefighters, paramedics and public safety personnel are encouraging the community to take simple precautions that can help prevent drowning and water-related emergencies.
Drowning can happen quickly and silently, often within seconds. Children are especially vulnerable, making constant supervision one of the most important steps parents and caregivers can take.
“Active supervision saves lives,” said Brett Fisher, an ambulance operator paramedic with San Bernardino County Fire. “Whether you’re at a pool, lake, beach or even at home around a bathtub, children should always be within arm’s reach of a responsible adult.”
San Bernardino County Fire recommends the following water safety tips:
- Always supervise children when they are near or in the water.
- Install and maintain barriers, such as fences and self-latching gates, around residential pools and spas.
- Ensure everyone wears a properly fitted life jacket when participating in water activities, especially on lakes and rivers.
- Learn to swim and encourage children to participate in age-appropriate swim lessons.
- Avoid distractions such as cellphones while supervising swimmers.
- Never swim alone; always use the buddy system.
- Learn CPR and basic first aid skills.
According to emergency responders, early intervention can significantly improve outcomes during a drowning emergency. The sooner bystanders begin CPR and use an automated external defibrillator (AED) when appropriate, the greater the chances of survival and recovery.
San Bernardino County Fire encourages community members to become CPR-certified through organizations such as the American Red Cross and the American Heart Association. CPR certification courses are widely available and can equip individuals with the skills needed to act confidently during an emergency.
As families enjoy the summer season, San Bernardino County Fire reminds everyone that a few simple safety measures can make all the difference.
During Water Safety Week, take the time to review safety practices with your family, stay alert around water and help ensure that every aquatic adventure ends safely.
