Family Fish & Wildlife Festival offers hands-on fishing workshops, wildlife exhibits at Prado Regional Park

Board of Supervisors Chairman and Third District Supervisor Dawn Rowe, Fourth District Supervisor Curt Hagman, Fifth District Supervisor Joe Baca, Jr., along with Regional Parks, San Bernardino County Fish & Game Commission, and Hesperia Lake Recreation & Park District, will host the 3rd Annual Family Fish & Wildlife Festival at Prado Regional Park on Saturday, June 8, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The festival is a family-friendly event that provides hands-on fishing workshops with fishing supplies provided, live demonstrations, animal exhibits, food booths, live music and more.

Local vendors, such as Bass Pro Shops, Inland Valley Big Brothers and Big Sisters, California Department of Fish & Wildlife (CDFW), Chino Valley Fire Department and many more will be onsite to greet eventgoers and offer prize giveaways.

Activities include archery lessons, games, face painting, arts and crafts, biking and more.

A fishing workshop will provide free rods as well as gear and bait for those who want to learn how to fish. The CDFW will stock 1,000 lbs. of catfish prior to the event.

We encourage eventgoers to bring their own chairs, food and snacks and spend the day with us. Food trucks will be onsite as well.

All ages are welcome! Leashed pets are welcome too!

Alpine Zoo hosts ice cream safari fundraiser

Get ready for fun, laughter and “beary” good ice cream at the coolest event of the summer!

Big Bear Alpine Zoo is hosting an Ice Cream Safari on Saturday, June 15, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

For a $5 donation to the Friends of the Big Bear Alpine Zoo, you’ll get five scoops of delicious ice cream, generously donated by the North Pole Fudge and Ice Cream Company in Big Bear Lake.

But that’s not all! While you’re enjoying your sweet treats, take the opportunity to explore the wonders of the zoo and meet some of its furry residents. Admission into the zoo is required to join in on the ice cream fun.

**Let your imagination go wild and chalk it up at Second Saturdays at the Museum**

Join us for a vibrant celebration of creativity at Victor Valley Museum on Saturday, June 8, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for Second Saturdays where visitors will have the opportunity to transform our sidewalks into colorful canvases.

Whether you are a young student, a professional artist, or haven’t touched chalk since grade school, we encourage you to attend for a fun and imaginative day!

The Victor Valley Museum is located at 11873 Apple Valley Rd. in Apple Valley. The museum is open Wednesday through Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. General admission is $10 (adult), $8 (military or senior), $7 (student), and $5 (children ages 6 to 12). Children five and under and Museum Foundation members are admitted free. Parking is free. The museums are accessible to persons with disabilities.

San Bernardino County Museum kicks summer off with Cosmic Nights star party

Looking for a starry-eyed event to add to your weekend? Head over to the San Bernardino County Museum on Saturday, June 15, from 7 to 10 p.m. for Cosmic Nights. In partnership with the San Bernardino Valley Amateur Astronomers, the museum invites visitors to gaze at stars, planets, the moon and other astronomical phenomena.

The evening features telescope viewing and an opportunity to discuss astronomy with telescope operators. Local food vendors will be onsite including Kona Ice of Redlands, Funnel Kake Frenzy, Sweet Treat Kingdom and UR Main Squeez.

Visitors are welcome to set up portable lawn chairs and blankets for extended viewing and are also encouraged to bring binoculars or set up their own telescopes. The event takes place outdoors and visitors are advised to wear comfortable clothing and shoes.

Not able to visit the museum during evening hours? Stop by during the day instead and see some of the fascinating exhibitions currently on display, including Holding History: 50 Years in Redlands, an exhibit that explores the evolution of the San Bernardino County Museum from its founding to now, with a special emphasis on the relationship between the institution and its community partners over the last 50 years.

The museum is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. General admission is $10 (adult), $8 (military or senior), $7 (student), and $5 (child ages 6 to 12). Explore, celebrate Father’s Day at Regional Parks

Looking for something special to do with dad on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 16? Plan a day of fishing, picnic and/or barbecue at Regional Parks. Regional Parks is currently stocking the lakes weekly with catfish through August.

Regional Parks offer fishing at Cucamonga-Guasti, Glen Helen, Mojave Narrows, Prado and Yucaipa.

The Fletes family, Leia and Frank recently spent time fishing at Glen Helen Regional Park with their two sons, Jacob, 2, and Nicholas, 4.

“Fathers casting lines with their kids, sharing stories, and teaching the art of fishing is more than just a fun outing, said Leia. “It’s a chance for dads to spend quality time with their children and pass on valuable life lessons about patience and persistence, the beauty of nature, and the joy of the outdoors.”

Behavioral Health hosts free poetry night at Victor Valley Museum to raise awareness on addiction

Join the San Bernardino County Department of Behavioral Health on Thursday, June 20, from 5 to 7 p.m. for Into Light: Illuminating Voices Poetry Night at the Victor Valley Museum at 11873 Apple Valley Rd. in Apple Valley. The event is hosted by the INTO LIGHT Project that puts a human face on the disease of addiction through hand-drawn portraits and written narratives to change the conversation about drug addiction.

County hosts Summer Wellness Extravaganza for community

The San Bernardino County Department of Behavioral Health (DBH) is excited to announce the Summer Wellness Extravaganza. This event will take place on Saturday, July 20, from 3 to 8 p.m. at California State University, San Bernardino. The event is free and open to the public, however registration required. In collaboration with the Department of Aging and Adult Services-Public Guardian and Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Inland Empire (BBBS), this event aims to connect youth and older adults to build resilience from the severe isolation and health impacts that may have resulted from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Summer Wellness Extravaganza will promote behavioral health awareness, physical well-being and overall wellness within the San Bernardino County communities. Attendees can look forward to various activities and resources at the event, including carnival games, food vendors, live music, fitness classes, mindfulness sessions, wellness activities and information booths.

In support of the event, Behavioral Health Director Dr. Geogina Yoshioka emphasized, “Events like this are a top priority for the county and our department. They offer a valuable opportunity to connect, engage, and have fun. San Bernardino County is not just where we live and work but also where we play, emphasizing that wellness is crucial for individuals of all ages!”

Additionally, Big Brothers Big Sisters will provide opportunities to experience the joy of mentorship. The U.S. Surgeon General noted mentorship programs as one of the best ways to help young people build connections and combat the Loneliness Epidemic. Attendees can learn more about the benefits of mentorship for their children or sign up to be a mentor to a young person for the day.

This collaborative effort underscores the importance of community partnerships in promoting well-being and supporting individuals in their journey toward better health. The Summer Wellness Extravaganza serves as a platform for education, empowerment and connection within the community.

Summer Meals program offers free, nutritious meals for kids, teens when school is out

Nutrition and Wellness Services is gearing up for summer meals! The Summer Meal Program is funded by the USDA and provides healthy meals to youth 18 and younger when school is not in session. There is no paperwork, enrollment or income qualifications required. Summer meals are served in many types of locations throughout San Bernardino County such as schools, parks, libraries and community centers. Some sites even provide fun activities for the kids. Nutrition and Wellness Services will be providing enrichment activities at 10 locations with a focus on Rethink Your Drink education and healthy beverage choices.

Regional Parks hiring lifeguards, pool managers for 2024 swim season

Build skills and valuable teamwork experience working outdoors as a lifeguard or pool manager at Glen Helen or Yucaipa Regional Parks swim facilities. The 2024 swim season runs through Labor Day weekend. Starting salaries for lifeguards begin at $17/hr. and pool managers start at $21/hr.

These positions are responsible for protecting the public against accidents in swim facilities, administering first aid/CPR if an accident should occur and maintaining and operating the pool, waterslides, and park equipment. Lifeguard and/or CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications are required at the time of hire. Reimbursements for certifications may be provided by Regional Parks.
